An SDMA-based MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks with smart antennas

چکیده
A wireless ad hoc network consists of a set of wireless devices. The wireless devices are capable of communicating with each other without the assistance of base stations. Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) is a new technology designed to optimize the performance of current and future mobile communication systems. In this paper, an SDMA-based MAC protocol (S-MAC) for wireless ad hoc networks with smart antennas is proposed. The proposed protocol exploits the SDMA system to allow reception of more than one packet from spatially separated transmitters. Using SDMA technology provides collision-free access to the communication medium based on the location of a node. The proposed protocol solves the hidden terminal problem, the exposed terminal problem, and the deafness problem. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed S-MAC in improving throughput and increasing spatial channel reuse. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Evaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...
متن کاملAd Hoc Networks Testbed Using a Practice Smart Antenna with IEEE802.15.4 Wireless Modules
Recent studies on directional media access protocols (MACs) using smart antennas for wireless ad hoc networks have shown that directional MACs outperform against traditional omini-directional MACs. Those studies evaluate the performance mainly on simulations, where antenna beam is assumed to be ideal, i.e., with neither side-lobes nor back-lobes. Propagation conditions are also assumed to be ma...
متن کاملImpact of Cooperation in Ad-hoc Networks with Heterogeneous Smart Antennas
The use of smart antennas in wireless ad-hoc networks has garnered significant attention over the last few years. Given the unique capabilities of smart antennas, and how they can improve performance in a typically constrained ad-hoc network environment, the attention is with merit. However, not much light has been shed on wireless ad-hoc networks that have nodes with varying antenna capabiliti...
متن کاملMultiple Access Protocols with Smart Antennas in Multihop Ad Hoc Rural-Area Networks
Multihop ad hoc networking is a very appealing technology for the deployment of wireless data networks. It eliminates the need for network planning and the reliance on fixed infrastructure. Multihop ad hoc networks are designed with a self-configuring capability and are able to adapt to the addition or removal of network radio units (nodes). This capability makes them simple to install, allowin...

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
